I just returned from my birthday weekend in Florida. Like all trips, I had a decently good time. But this won't go down in history as one of the best trips, for three reasons. Number one was the heat - IT WAS HOT! Like high humidity, real temp of 89 with a real feel of 103 type of heat. Very very uncomfortable, and it didn't cool down that much in the evenings. I never visit Florida in July or August, and this was just as bad - no fun!
The 2nd problem was my stupid foot (injured in a motorcycle wreck back when I was 20). If you've been reading these trip reports, you know that I've experienced some real pain after a long park day, to the point where I was lurching and limping and walking at about 1/3 of my usual speed. That didn't happen this time, but it was still giving me plenty of trouble (big toe, arch, ankle - you name it!). I did a lot of extensive walking getting ready for this trip, but I guess it wasn't enough. I had some pretty high powered pain pills, the kind that don't stone you out or anything, but just make what's hurting hurt less. It also has a bit of a mood enhancer in it, so not only are you not hurting so bad, but you feel pretty danged good about it! So it wasn't as bad as in the past, but it was still a fairly big factor.
And then the third problem, again, was my overall energy level. I think I'm still touring like I was 30, and you just can't do that at 60. I need to drop some serious poundage, and then schedule things to where I'm not out late at night and then up early the next morning. I guess I just don't like to admit that I'm getting older, and that's a condition that I can't do anything about.
Enough about that - let's get to the trip!
Thursday, 9/29 -
The trip started out with a cheap upgrade to 1st Class on American. I had the type of seat that will lay fully down - it has about 20 buttons to control the back, seat, legs - really fun and very comfy! A quick visit to Dollar to pick up my Kia Soul (mini-SUV) and I was on my way. I always do a bit of radio surfing, and was pleased to find a new jazz station. But after a day or so it started to get old - they were only playing real traditional "hard" jazz, which only goes so far. Imagine my joy when, upon playing with the radio, I found out that I had SIRIUS SATELLITE! I found a 70's rock station, and was in hog heaven the rest of the trip!
This was the first trip where my room was ready before I got to my hotel (Port Orleans Riverside), so I used my Magic Band and went right to the room. I was a little concerned when I noticed that I wasn't in a standard room, but a Character Room -
I made a quick call to the front desk to make sure I wasn't being charged for something I didn't want, and they assured me that it was just a shuffling of rooms and that I'd gotten a free upgrade. It was a little strange to sleep with a big picture of Tiana on the wall, but I got over it. I also wanted to check on my pin to make sure it was properly associated with my Magic Band, and was told that I could do that on the app. I pulled out my cell phone, and sure enough, there's a step there to reset your pin! Once everything was all set, I was off to Epcot.
